Women-Only Triathlons in 2013
According to a recent study, 55% of newcomers to triathlon were female. Surprised? We aren’t. More and more women are finding the sport of triathlon ideal for supporting fitness and weight-loss goals, as well as a great way to make new social connections.
If 2013 is your year, choosing a women’s-only event can make your first triathlon even more memorable. Women-only triathlons often work to create an ultra-supportive environment for newbees. Many events offer introductory clinics, training, and sometimes even mentors. Often, you’ll find a mini-sprint distance.
To help you out, Tri-Eva has compiled a list of some of the best women’s triathlon’s in the United States. These events promise outstanding experiences for women in triathlon at every level of experience. Take a look and see if your race is here.
The Danskin Triathlon Series has been inspiring female athletes for over 20 years and has eight events planned this year including Orlando, Florida (5/12), Austin, Texas (6/2), Webster, Massachusetts (7/21), Howell, Michigan (8/4), Seattle, Washington (8/18), Sandy Hook, New Jersey (9/8), and Palm Springs, California (TBA).
In its sixth year, the SheROX Triathlon series has seven sprint events throughout the US starting in Naperville, Illinois , the series moves to Cherry Creek, Colorado, Detroit, Michigan , Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , Devens, Massachusetts , Asbury Park, New Jersey , and ends in San Diego, California. For the newbee, they also offer a unique mentor program.
The Iron Girl event series starts April, 14, in Clearwater, Florida, and continues in Columbia, Maryland (4/28), Atlanta, Georgia (5/19), Lake Zurich, Illinois (6/16), Syracuse, New York (8/4), Columbia, Maryland (8/18), Cherry Creek, Colorado (8/24), Seattle, Washington (9/8), Rocky Gap, Maryland (9/8), Bloomington, Minnesota (9/22), Lake Las Vegas, Nevada (10/26), Del Mar, California (12/8), and ends in Fountain Hills, Arizona (12/15). Iron Girl’s mission is to empower women toward a healthy lifestyle.
North Carolina is home to the Ramblin Rose Women’s Triathlon Series, presented by Endurance Magazine. Eight mini-sprints of a 225-yard swim, 8-mile bike, and 2-mile run take place throughout the state.
In Michigan the premier women-only triathlon is Tri Goddess Tri from Epic Races. Their inaugural event was the first ever all-women’s triathlon/duathlon in Michigan. Held at Big Portage Lake, just 12 miles west of Chelsea. Remote, beautiful, quiet, and safe. This is a mini sprint race designed for women trying their first triathlon (6/23).
In Nebraska, the Omaha Women’s Triathlon boasts the Midwest’s only USAT Sanctioned Womens Only Triathlon (6/2). In Colorado, Denver’s thousands of women participate in the Tri for the Cure to fight breast cancer (8/4). In Utah, the Women of Steel Triathlon was recognized by was recognized by Active.com as the Best Sprint Triathlon for 2011!
In Northern California, the Mermaid Triathlon & Duathlon comes to Alameda on June 9 and to Capitola on October 6. And in Southern California, four women’s only multi-sport events are packed into the LUNA BAR Women’s Triathlon Festival in Herald, California (9/7). Up the West Coast near Portland, the Wahine All Women’s Triathlon sports a Hawaiian theme in Fairview, Oregon.
